Abstract

Marine pollution is an environmental problem that continues to increase and has a major impact on the health of coastal communities. Various types of pollution such as industrial waste, plastic waste, oil spills, and household waste cause a decline in seawater quality and damage coastal ecosystems. Coastal communities that depend on marine products are the most vulnerable groups affected by this pollution. Based on several news reports in Indonesia, cases of marine pollution in Lampung, West Aceh, and the northern coastal area of Java show impacts on public health, such as skin diseases, digestive disorders, respiratory problems, and the risk of poisoning due to the consumption of contaminated seafood. In addition to affecting health, marine pollution also influences the social and economic conditions of coastal communities because of the decline in fishermen’s catches. This study aims to determine the impact of marine pollution on the health of coastal communities based on case studies from various news sources and internet references. The method used in this study is a literature review by analyzing several online news reports related to marine pollution in Indonesia. The results of the study indicate that marine pollution has a significant effect on the quality of health and the lives of coastal communities. Therefore, environmental supervision, proper waste management, and increased public awareness are needed to maintain marine cleanliness.
